Top 10 Jewish Astronauts and Cosmonauts

  1. Boris Volynov: First Jew in space. Launched January 15, 1969. Only Jewish-Russian Cosmonaut.
  2. Judith Resnik: First American Jew (and Jewish woman) in space. Launched August 30, 1984.  Died in the Challenger explosion in 1986.
  3. Ilan Ramon: First Israeli astronaut. Died in the Columbia explosion in 2003.
  4. Jeffrey Hoffman: Launched April 12, 1985.
  5. Ellen Baker: Launched October 18, 1989.
  6. Marsha Ivins: Launched January 9, 1990.
  7. Jerome Apt: Launched September 12, 1992.
  8. David Wolf: Launched October 18, 1993.
  9. Martin Fettman: Launched October 18, 1993.
  10. John Grunsfeld: Launched March 2, 1995.

* There have only been 14 Jews in space (as of 2011) so it would be unfair to the last four Jews in space to not include them.  Besides the historic, “First Jew,” “First American Jew/Jewish Woman,” and “First Israeli” in space, none are more or less important than the others. The four “honorable mentions” are: 1) Scott Horowitz, 2) Mark Polansky, 3) Garrett Reisman, and 4) Gregory Chamitoff.
