Top 10 Must Known Yiddish Words and Phrases


  1. Oy vey: An expression close to the English phrase “Oh my G-d” or “I can’t believe it.”   
  2. Shmuck: Idiot (literally, the male anatomy part).  “This shmuck tried to shortchange me yesterday.” 
  3. Chutzpah: Gall/Nerve. “This guy had the chutzpah to tell me that my son isn’t good enough for his daughter!”            
  4. Shiksa: A non-Jewish girl. Often times, but not always, used derogatorily. “I can’t believe my son married a shiksa!”                                                                             
  5. Nosh: To snack on something. Means to eat, but not eating a big meal, just something small.   
  6. Tuchas: Butt. The word tooshie comes from Tuchas. The “ch” is the guttural “ch” as in Chanukkah.                                                                                   
  7. Spiel: Telling a story, usually one that another person doesn’t want to hear. “He gave me this whole spiel about why he was late to work.”     
  8. Shlep: To move something you don’t want to. “I have to shlep my big T.V. every time a move to a new apartment.”
  9. Kvetch: Complain. “Stop kvetching about all the homework you have!”
  10. Mensch: A righteous person. “This mensch let me use his cell phone when mine ran out of batteries.”
This is a really funny book, and teaches you Yiddish with the old Dick and Jane characters.

  1. Hava Nagila: The mainstay song of every wedding and bar/bat mitzvah.                                       
  2. David Melech Yisrael: The entire song is “David is the king of Israel / Lives, lives and exists.”           
  3. Am Yisrael Chai: The entire song is “The people of Israel Live. Our forefather still lives.”                      
  4. Hatikvah: Hatikvah means “The Hope.”  It is the national anthem of Israel.                        
  5. Lo Yisa Goy: A song that looks to a time in the world where there will not be any war anymore.
  6. Shalov Rav: A song asking G-d for peace and blessings to the Jewish people.
  7. Siman Tov: A song traditionally sung right after something joyous just happened (like breaking the glass at the end of a wedding)
  8. Ufaratsta: A song about the spreading out of Jews throughout the world.
  9. Tumbalalaika: A Yiddish song about a boy asking riddles to a girl in order to find a smart wife.
  10. Oh Hanukkah: A song that every Jewish kid knows because they have to have one song to counter the hundreds of Christmas songs.

  2. Calvin Klein: Started as a Calvin Klein Limited in 1968 as a coat shop. Now this brand is famous for jeans, perfumes, underwear and many other things. 
  3. Ralph Lauren: Known for Polo Ralph Lauren brand which makes high-end wear for both men and women. Like Calvin Klein, started in 1968.
